When installing pearl tile, make sure all your products, substrate, tile, thinset and grout are compatible with each other. Inspect all materials before use and getting started. Dry lay or do a mockup to confirm your layout, grout joint size and that the final look meets your expectations.

As products of nature, pearl will have inherent variation in color, shade, and character, included markings and veining, throughout any given lot of material.

Q: I am considering using this as a feature backsplash behind our 48" professional range (the rest of the main backsplash will be Calacatta Gold 3x6 subway tile). Do any of these Mother of Pearl tiles have issues regarding tolerating heat or splashing of acidic foods, staining from curries, tomato, etc?
A: It’s the backsplash behind my cooktop. I had it coated with a professional grade sealer and have no problems at all! I cook all the time.A: Pearl must be sealed in order to prevent staining and discoloration. They can tolerate heat. Mother of Pearl and Pearl Shell tiles must be regularly cleaned and maintained to extend the life and beauty of the tile. The tiles can be cleaned with a neutral mild detergent. Keep surfaces clean from abrasive dirt and do not use abrasive cleaners, powders, scouring pads, steel wool or sandpaper. Do not let soap, bleach or other cleaning solutions set on the surface. Seashells consist primarily of Calcium Carbonate. -
Q: Can it be used as countertop in the bathroom?
A: This material is not suitable for countertop installation.A: No. It is very thin and would probably break pretty easily.A: No. I think it would be too fragile. The thinness of the tile makes it perfect for a backsplash but I would not think it would be strong enough for countertop usage. It is absolutely beautiful in the right setting however!A: I would NOT recommend it. It's a delicate product.A: Oh I wouldn’t it as a countertop. It should only be used as a backsplash.
The other of pearl is very thin and wouldn’t work as a counter top. -
Q: Is this a grout less tile pattern? It appears groutless.
A: Yes, our tile installer said it was a groutless pattern. It's beautiful in person.A: It needs unsanded grout. My tile guy had a really tough time installing this tile. It was almost impossible to match them up together, and even with the grout, you can see the divisions between each sheet. Pretty tile, but it doesn't end up looking like the pictures on this site.A: It does take grout but so little it's not even worth it. We mixed it up and wiped it over it, but there is truly so little if could almost go without. The tile is beautiful!! It's so different from what everyone else has.A: My installer used grout- this website doesn't allow me to show a photo of the finished wetbar backsplash - I'm very happy with the result. One important point- this tile come in a VERY THIN SHEET....not like other, thicker, tiles. So be aware that if you plan to have this be one flat surface coming up from a thicker backsplash (granite, marble, etc) surface, you need to plan on that.A: Our installer did use grout (which was ours from another project). He had to do a lot of cutting-and-piecing to fit the space, and it looks great but I will tell you the "downfall" - this is a very "thin veneer" meaning our installer was concerned about it not being thick enough to match the granite backsplash. It is only a fraction of an inch thick as I recall...so it won't be as thick as some stone backsplash''s and will preclude a smooth backsplash if that is your preference. The website doesn't allow me to attach a photo, and we are happy with the result, but I mention it for full disclosure. -
Q: Is this tile seamless and groutless? I received a sample and it's beautiful.
A: This tile does not require grout.A: If it is installed properly it is seamless and groutless and looks unbelievably beautiful.A: I recently installed this in my client's powder room and it is pretty seamless. Looks amazing installed. -
Q: What is the thickness of this tile? Is it mesh-mounted?
A: It is mesh mounted. It is less than 1/8" thick.A: Beautiful tile, not thick at all. This tile is 2mm in thickness and does have mesh backing.A: The tile is 2 mm thick and is mesh-mounted. -
Q: What pencil trim would work well with this?

Alternatively, you can line the tile with a clean caulk line that matches the color of the grout.A: I am using this tile as a backsplash in between cabinets but any simple white pencil trim could work.
I would ask your installer because this is a very thin veneer type tile. -
Q: Is this a good choice for shower walls ?
A: This tile is suitable for showers. That said, please keep in mind that pearl can discolor and darken over time when submerged in water. It should be fine on the walls.
